Why Typing Speed Matters & How to Improve
In today’s digital world, typing is a fundamental skill used for communication, education, and work. Whether you’re a student writing essays, a professional drafting emails, or a programmer writing code, your typing speed and accuracy directly impact your productivity. A good typing speed can save hours each week and reduce physical strain by promoting proper technique. This typing test helps you measure your current performance and track improvement over time.
What is a Good Typing Speed?
Typing speed is measured in Words Per Minute (WPM). Here’s a general benchmark:
- Below 30 WPM – Beginner / hunt-and-peck
- 30–40 WPM – Average casual typist
- 40–60 WPM – Good for most office work
- 60–80 WPM – Above average, professional level
- 80–100 WPM – Excellent, typical for transcriptionists
- 100+ WPM – Exceptional, competitive typist
However, accuracy is equally important. Aim for at least 95% accuracy – constantly correcting errors slows you down.
Tips to Increase Your Typing Speed
- Learn touch typing: Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF for left hand, JKL; for right) and use all fingers without looking at the keyboard.
- Practice regularly: Even 10–15 minutes daily can lead to significant improvement. Use our tool to take timed tests with varied texts.
- Focus on accuracy first: Speed will come naturally as you make fewer mistakes. Slow down to build muscle memory.
- Use online resources: There are many free typing courses and games (like TypingClub, Keybr) that structure your practice.
- Maintain good posture: Sit up straight, keep wrists relaxed, and position your keyboard at elbow height.
- Take breaks: Typing for long periods can cause fatigue. Stretch your hands and wrists regularly.
How WPM is Calculated
WPM is calculated as (number of characters typed / 5) / time in minutes. The “/5” is because an average word is considered 5 characters (including spaces). For example, typing 300 characters in 1 minute gives 60 WPM. Our calculator uses the number of correctly typed characters to compute your net WPM, ensuring that errors reduce your score.
Typing in Hindi (or Other Languages)
This tool supports both English and Hindi. For Hindi, you may need a transliteration tool (like Google Input Tools) or a Hindi keyboard layout. The test measures the same way – characters typed correctly count toward your WPM. Practicing in your native language can help you become more comfortable with the keyboard layout and improve overall fluency.
